Baseball takes two from Siena, while Softball drops both at Spring Arbor

Game One: Fisher 17, Siena Heights University 1

Reynaldo Nunez had 5 RBI's in the first inning, including a Grand Slam

Adrian, MI - After being mercy ruled yesterday by Siena Heights, the Fisher Baseball team decided to return the favor as they scored 12 runs in the first inning en route to a 17-1 victory in five innings.

The first innings was highlighted by a pair of home runs. Junior Jose Rodriguez (Clermont, FL) hit a moon shot over the batter's eye in dead center field. The estimated distance is believed to be over 450 feet. Fisher would score seven more times before junior Reynaldo Nunez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) approached the plate for the second time in the inning with the bases loaded. Nunez then deposited a hanging curve ball well over the left-field fence for a grand slam. This was the second grand slam hit this season by the Falcons as freshman Dave Ferreira (Saugus, MA) hit one against the University of Houston at Victoria on March 19th. In the inning, Nunez accumulated 5 RBI's and he also extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

The Fisher offensive attack was not done as they continued to add a run in the third and two runs in the fourth and fifth. Sophomore Richie Welch (Everett, MA) collected an RBI hit in the third while freshman Sebastiano Petruzzelli (Saugus, MA) and freshman Sammy Alejandro (East Hartford, CT) had the RBI hits in the fourth. In the fifth inning, freshman Jesse Oakes (Piermont, NH) knocked in Welch for his first collegiate RBI and Alejandro hit a sacrifice fly to account for the second run of the inning.

Senior Sammy Luciano (Union City, NJ) pitched all five innings for the Falcons. He allowed the SHU Saints to just one run on four hits while striking out one and walking one. Luciano improves his record to 3-1 on the season.

Game Notes: Of the fourteen hits that the Falcons had in game one, only Rodriguez had a multi-hit game. He went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a Home Run. The twelve runs in the first inning matches the game high for runs scored during the 2010 season.


Game Two: Fisher 10, Siena Heights University 2

Dave Ferreira went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's in the victory

Adrian, MI - The Fisher offense continued to stay hot with the bats as they scored 10 runs on 11 hits to complete the double header sweep over Siena Heights University.

As in game one, Fisher scored early and often. The offense gave game two's starting pitcher senior Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) a 4-0 lead before he even stepped on the mound. Sophomore Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) led the game off with a base hit and was sacrificed over to second by junior Jose Rodriguez (Clermont, FL). With two away and runners on first and second, junior Reynaldo Nunez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) extended his hitting streak to 13 games as he singled home Lunetta. Freshman Dave Ferreira (Saugus, MA) then singled through the left side of the infield to plate courtesy runner, sophomore Richie Welch (Everett, MA), for a 2-0 lead. Ferreira's classmate Denon Rushing (Palmdale, CA) then duplicated what Ferreira did as he singled through the infield to score both Nunez and Ferreira.

That's all the offense that Thompson would need as he pitched brilliantly over his five innings of work. He gave up two runs (both earned) on four hits while sending three SHU Saints down by way of the K. Senior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, MA) came on and pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three of the nine batters he faced.

The Fisher offense added single runs in the third and fourth before putting up another four spot in the sixth. Ferreira singled home Welch in the third while junior Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA) crossed the plate in the fourth when Lunetta was caught stealing.

Three of the four runs in the sixth came courtesy of Rodriguez. His ground ball to the right side, where the SHU first baseman booted, allowed Oliveira and Welch to score. With one out and runners at second and third, Rodriguez showcased his speed as he stole home! Senior Alfredo Torres (Lawrence, MA), who reached base after being hit by the pitch, scampered over to third on the steal of home. He would then advance 90 feet and score the fourth run of the inning on Nunez grounder to third.

With the two victories, Fisher College improves its 2010 record to 8-11. They will look to take two more tomorrow and make it four of five from Siena Heights. The double header is scheduled to start at 10 am (cst).

Game Notes: Torres and Ferreira recorded two hits apiece as they were the only Falcons to have a multi-game. Welch scored three runs in game two, that's tied for the most runs scored in one game by a Falcon this season (Lunetta scored three runs against Houston-Victoria on March 19th).

Softball

Game One: Spring Arbor 18, Fisher 0

Spring Arbor, MI - The Lady Falcons managed just three hits off of two different Spring Arbor pitchers as SAU defeated the Fisher softball team by a final score of 18-0 in a mercy ruled shortened five innings.

Sophomore Brittany Calderon (Rockland, MA) pitched four innings giving up 18 runs (nine of which were earned). SAU recorded 19 hits while walking four times and striking out just once.

Offensively for Fisher, the heart of the order produced a hit each. Junior Amanda Davis (Dos Palos, CA) and senior Jackie Streeter (Westminster, MA) were both 1-for-2 while junior Michelle Oliveiro (Everett, MA) went 1-for-1.

With the loss, the Lady Falcons fall to 3-14 on the season.


Game Two: Spring Arbor 19, Fisher 2

Game two saw the Lady Falcons score two runs but that was not enough as the explosive Spring Arbor offense recorded the double header sweep by a final score of 19-2.

Freshman Mika Wilson (Chelsea, ME) was the starting pitcher and pitched four innings in the loss. She allowed SAU to score 19 runs (all earned) on 20 hits while striking out four.

The Lady Falcons got on the board in the top of the first with two runs. Sophomore Brittany Calderon (Rockland, MA) and junior Amanda Davis (Dos Palos, CA) both crossed the plate on senior Jackie Streeter's (Westminster, MA) RBI base hit.

That was all for the Lady Falcons as the SAU pitcher dominated the rest of the game.

Streeter finished the game going 1-for-3 with a RBI. Davis went 1-for-3 with a run scored while Calderon hit 1-for-2 with a run scored.

The Lady Falcons drop to 3-15 on the season. They will travel to Adrian, MI for a 10 am double header with Siena Heights University to close out their four game road trip.
