Roxbury, MA - The Fisher College Basketball teams opened up their 2010 Sunrise Conference play tonight against the University of Maine at Machias.
In the women's match up, Fisher battled a strong Machias team into overtime. Tied at 47 with less than 30 seconds to play, Machias sent a flurry of shots towards the net. None of them fell in and the game was forced into overtime. Machias would use the extra time to take home the victory. In the game, senior Leslie Wadhams (Burlington, VT) scored 18 points and collected 17 rebounds to lead the team. Also contributing in the game were junior Tiffany Beckman (East Hartford, CT), who scored 13 points, and freshman Darneisha Ruffin (Stoughton, MA), who had 10 rebounds. Sophomore Mackenzi Peeler (Dorchester, MA) pulled down 13 rebounds, her career high. The women will hit the floor again tomorrow night when they take on the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Game time is set for 5pm at Madison Park Community Center.
The Men's would not need overtime against Maine-Machias, as they won easily 88-72. The defending Sunrise Conference champions showed why they are the team to beat again this year. Led by juniors Louis Williams (Burlington, VT) and Casey Pursell (Seattle, WA), Fisher took a 41-36 lead into halftime. Fisher would scored 47 more points in the second half to put the game away. Williams led all scores with 24 points. Freshman Jasmin Handanovic (Milford, NH) chipped in with 22 points, while Pursell added 20 points in the win. Fisher improves to 13-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The men's team will return to action tomorrow night (1/14) against the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Tip off will be at 7pm at Madison Park Community Center.
