Pair of Fisher Baseball student-athletes recognized

It was announced that juniors Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) and Sammy Luciano (Union City, NJ) have earned Sunrise Conference honors for the week of April 13th - April 19th. Thompson earned the Player of the Week after he pounded out eight hits in five games. Thompson went 8-for-18 and drove in eight runs while scoring six more. He was also 3-for-5 with three doubles and four RBIs in an 18-2 win over the College of St. Joseph. Thompson is fourth in the conference in RBIs with 27, seventh in doubles (7) and is batting .328 with 17 runs.

Luciano has been named the Sunrise Conference Pitcher of the Week. He receives the nod after shutting down the University of Maine at Presque Isle 17-4. Luciano recorded nine strikeouts and scattered five hits with no earned runs and just two walks over six innings. He is currently tied for second in the conference in strikeouts with 32 and is second in earned-run average at 4.25 and opponents batting average holding teams to a .248 average.

Fisher Baseball takes two from Maine-Farmington

Farmington, ME – The Fisher College Baseball team was able to sweep the season series versus Head Coach Scott Dulin’s alma mata, the University of Maine at Farmington, with a pair of wins today. In game one, junior Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) threw a complete game shutout to lead the way as Fisher won 3-0. Thompson struck out six and scattered six hits through his seven innings of work. Offensively in game one, seniors Tom Englehardt (Bradford, MA) and Eddy Delcarmen (Boston, MA) were both 2 for 4 and a stolen base with Delcarmen recording 2 RBI’s while Englehardt only recorded 1 RBI. The story of the game was Thompson. The left hander was reunited with his high school catcher JJ Navas (Beverly, MA) and that battery turned out into Fisher’s first complete game shutout of the season. With the win, Thompson improves his record to 3-1.

In game two, Fisher scored a pair of runs in the 4th and 5th innings while adding an insurance run in the 7th as they took the game by a final score of 5-3. Sophomore Kevin Ryan (Cheshire, CT) earned the victory on the mound as he pitched 5 innings allowing 1 run and 5 hits. This marks the sixth straight quality start by Fisher College pitchers in the past three days. Ryan improved his record to 3-2 while sophomore flame thrower Mark Dorso (Waterbury, CT) earned his second save. Dorso entered the game after Eddie Guerrero (Boston, MA) pitched himself into trouble in his second inning of work. Dorso just needed one batter as he retired the UMF batter on strikes. Sophomore Reynaldo Nunez (Santo Domingo, DR) hit his first home run of the season on his way to a 3 for 4 day at the plate. Navas also had recorded a three hit game as he was 3 for 4 with a triple. Also for Fisher College, Bobby Sorenson (Meridain, CT) made his first appearance in pinstripes as he started in right field and was 1 for 1 at the plate.

Fisher now looks forward to the Sunrise Conference Tournament which will be held at Fraiser Field in Lynn, MA on Friday, April 24. The championship game will be held on Saturday, April 25. The Sunrise Conference schools competing in this event will be the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Vermont Technical College and the State University of New York at Canton. Fisher College will look to take their 5th straight conference title. Fisher Baseball splits weekend set

Haverhill, MA – In what has become a heated rivalry, this weekend’s games between the Fisher Baseball team and Briarcliffe College was intense. On the first day of action, Briarcliffe took two games as they sneaked out a 5-3 win versus junior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, MA) and beat sophomore Kevin Michael (Ipswich, MA) in game two by a final of 3-1. Offensively, senior Tom Engelhardt (Bradford, MA) was 4 for 7 with 3 RBI’s. Sophomore Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA) recorded a multi-hit game in game two by going 2 for 4. Pitching wise, Shanahan threw 7 innings allowing 5 runs on 9 hits while striking out 5. In game two, Micheal went the distance (7 innings) allowing just 3 runs on 7 hits and retiring 3 Briarcliffe batters by way of the K.

Day Two was a different story for Fisher College. Fueled by Briarcliffe’s unsportsman like anticts after day one, Fisher roared back. In the first game, junior Sammy Luciano (Union City, NJ) threw a gem. He scattered 5 hits over 7 innings and fanned 5. Freshman Austin Brodie (Haverhill, MA) came on in relief during the extra frames and earned the win. He pitched 2 innings and struck out one. In the bottom of the 9th inning, junior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ) led off with a hit, senior Jesse Avalos (Haverhill, MA) came off the bench and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Pena to second. Head Coach Scott Dulin used his bench one more time as sophomore Matthew McDougal-Shaver (Minneapolis, MN) hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop, Pena advanced to third on that play. The heroics were left up to junior Zach Thompson (Salem, MA). He promptly hit an 0-2 pitch up the middle to center which scored Pena for the game winner. Final score was 3-2 Fisher College. Game two, Fisher College didn’t let Briarcliffe have a chance as they scored 10 runs in a 10-1 rout. Englehardt went 4 for 4 with 4 doubles, 2 RBI’s and 4 runs scored. Freshman Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) went 2 for 4 with a double and senior Eddy Delcarmen (Boston, MA) walked 3 times.

Fisher travels to Farmington, Maine where they will take on the Beavers of the University of Maine at Farmington in a double header. Game time is slated for 12pm.

Fisher Baseball continues its winning ways

Haverhill, MA – The Fisher Baseballl team team continued its offensive trend as they routed fellow Sunrise Conference member, College of Saint Joseph’s, in two straight games. In game one, freshman Richie Welch (Everett, MA) and sophomore Reynaldo Nunez (Santo Domingo, DR) paced the Fisher attack with three hits. Also recording a muti-hit game were senior Jesse Avalos (Haverhill, MA), who was 2-3, sophomore Matthew McDougal-Shaver (Minneapolis, MN), 2-4, and sophomore Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA), 2-3. Freshman Joe Aniki (Thomaston, CT) joined in on the 19 hit attack as he recorded a hit in his first college at bat. Sophomore Kevin Ryan (Cheshire, CT) dealt 5 innings of 2 hit ball, allowing 3 runs (a two run HR and a RBI double) to earn his second win of the season. Fisher won the game by a final score of 18-3.

In the second game, four different Fisher players recorded a three hit game. Juniors Zack Thompson (Salem, MA), who was 3-5 with 4 RBI’s, and Jon Olivo (Boston, MA), who went 3-4 with 3 RBI’s. Both Nunez and freshman Matthew Hendy (Rockport, MA) were a perfect 3-3. On the mound sophomore Kevin Michael (Ipswich, MA) pitched 5 innings, scattering 3 this while allowing two CSJ runners to cross the plate. With the win, Micheal improves to 3-3 on the season and Fisher improved to 19-15. Final score in game two was Fisher 19, College of Saint Joseph’s 2.
