Wild Walk-Off Tuesday

Haverhill, MA – In what was a wild day at the ballpark, both the Fisher College Baseball and Softball teams used a couple of walk-off hits to defeat Sunrise Conference opponent Vermont Technical College.

Baseball

Junior Zack Thompson

In the first game, starting pitcher Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) earned his first win of the season as he scattered 5 hits, striking out 8 while surrendering only 1 run in the 5 innings he pitched. Senior Eddy Delcarmen (Boston, MA) came on in relief of Thompson and pitched 2 scoreless frames, facing only 6 batters and striking out 3. Offensively, Fisher was led by sophomore shortstop Kevin Ryan (Chesire, CT). Ryan went 3-4 with a double and a RBI while playing errorlessly at short. Fellow classmate, Matthew McDougal-Shaver (Minneapolis, MN) knocked in 2 runs to help Fisher beat the visiting Vermont Technical College Green Knights, 5-1.

Senior Eddy Delcarmen

Game two started out just like the first one. Fisher scored 4 times in the bottom of the 2^nd inning. Vermont Tech could not solve starting pitcher Kevin Ryan. Ryan allowed only 1 (unearned) run over 7 innings while striking out 12 batters. However, Vermont Tech got to the Fisher bullpen. Freshman Austin Brodie (Haverhill, MA) allowed 1 run in the 8^th inning, which made the score 5-2. In the top of the 9^th inning, junior Eddie Guerrero (Boston, MA) came on for the save. He allowed 3 runs to cross the plate (and tie the game) while only recording two outs. Sophomore Mark Dorso (Waterbury, CT) came one to stop the bleeding and retire the only batter he faced. Here is where the dramatics start. Freshman Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) singled to begin the bottom of the 9^th. Junior Juan Eusebio (Union City, NJ) came off the bench and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Lunetta into scoring position. Head Coach Scott Dulin then relied on senior Eddy Delcarmen to win the game. Delcarmen did just that as he lined a 1-1 offering into left field for a game winning walk off hit. Fisher swept the day from Vermont Tech as they beat VTC in game two 6-5. Fisher had three players recording 2 or more hits. Sophomore Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA) was 2-4, sophomore Reynaldo Nunez (Santo Domingo, DR) finally broke out of his slump by going 2-3 with 2 RBI’s and Lunetta was 2-5 in game two.

Softball

Junior Jackie Streeter

Down 4-3 going into the bottom of the 7^th and final inning, Fisher mounted a come back versus Sunrise Conference opponent Vermont Technical College. With one out, sophomore Michelle Oliverio (Everett, MA) singled to center. The next batter, freshman Deb Fuller (Hampton, NH) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Oliverio into scoring position. Junior Jackie Streeter (Westminster, MA)was the next batter. The reigning Sunrise Conference Softball Player of the Week deposited a 1-2 offering over the left-center field fence for a two-run walk off Home Run. Fisher won 5-4. That home run highlighted Streeter’s day as she finished a perfect 4-4 with 4 RBI’s, 2 doubles and a Home Run. Freshman Brittany Calderon (Rockport, MA) earned her 4^th win of the season as she allowed 4 runs, 5 hits and striking out 8 over her 7 innings of work.

In game two, Streeter’s hot bat continued to sizzle as Fisher beat Vermont Tech 8-5. Streeter was 2-4 with another RBI, but she was not the only Fisher player to record 2 hits. Sophomore Jessica Augusta (Methuen, MA) went 2-3 with a RBI and a stolen base. Streeter pitched a complete game, allowing just 5 runs on 5 hits and striking out 5. She earned her 4^th win of the season with the victory.

Both the Baseball and Softball teams continue their Sunrise Conference play, as they take on Vermont Technical College tomorrow (April 1, 2009) at Haverhill Stadium. Both double headers start at 3pm.
