Baseball splits the double header!
Edwin Pena was 6-7 with 4 RBI's on his 22nd Birthday as Fisher went 1-1 on the day against TX-Brownsville and Valley City State
Brownsville, TX - The Fisher College Baseball team captured its first victory of the season in the nightcap against Valley City State, 11-4. They lost the first game of the day to the University of Texas-Brownsville by a final score of 19-9.Game One: Texas-Brownsville 19, Fisher College 9
The Scorpions used two 3 run home runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Fisher College Falcons by a score of 19-9. Matt Ginn belted a 3 run home run to begin the fateful fifth, which has a troublesome inning for the Falcons in 2010. The game was called due to the 10 run mercy rule when Gus Henggeler hit a 3 run run shot over the left field wall.
Offensively for the Falcons, they produced 9 runs on 9 hits. Sophomore Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) celebrated his 20th birthday in style as he went 2-4 in the game with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Also sharing the birthday spotlight was senior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ) who went 3-3 with a double and 3 runs batted in. Senior Alfredo Torres (Lawrence, MA) added three runs batted in himself as his bases clearing double in the second inning gave Fisher the early 7-2 lead.
Senior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, MA) started for the 0-7 Falcons. He pitched 3.2 innings allowing 7 runs (all earned) on 6 hits and he struck out five hitters. Freshman Casey Reed (Ossipee, NH) was the losing pitcher as he threw 1.1 innings, giving up 6 runs on five hits. Two of those five hits happen to be home runs, a solo shot by Brian Bustos and the three run homer hit by Matt Ginn.
Fisher will enjoy a short break as they will play in the nightcap of action here at Scorpion Field on the campus of UTB/TSC.
Game Two: Fisher 11, Valley City State 4
Senior Sammy Luciano (Union City, NJ) pitched a solid six innings and the Fisher Falcon offense continues to click as they roll to an 11-4 victory over Valley City State University.
The offense wasted no time as junior Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA) led off with a single to right. He then proceeded to score on a two run home run by fellow classmate Jose Rodriguez (Clermont, FL). Freshman Dave Ferreira (Saugus, MA) singled to right and then scored on junior Reynaldo Nunez's (Santiago, Dominican Republic) RBI ground out to short. Fisher would add another run in the second inning when senior Rob Mondello (Haverhill, MA) scampered home on freshman Jose Paulino's (Lawrence, MA) base hit to left field. Nunez then scored the go ahead run in the third inning as he showed his speed by scoring on a wild pitch.
Fisher would not look back as they scored five more runs in the fourth and Nunez capped off the scoring with a home run to left center in the sixth.
Luciano scattered six hits over his six innings of work. He allowed the VCSU Vikings just four runs (all earned) while retiring seven hitters via the "punchado". Mondello came on in relief and pitched a scoreless seventh to seal the victory.
Fisher will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon (Monday, March 15) as the take on Valley City State University from North Dakota. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1 pm (cst).
