Fisher Baseball Wins Fifth Straight Conference Championship

Lynn, MA – The Fisher Baseball team captured its fifth straight Sunrise Conference Championship award by beating the University of Maine at Presque Isle 18-0 in the championship game. Fisher cruised through the tournament by outscoring their opponents 44-7. In the opening round, the #1 seeded Falcons beat the #4 seed State University of New York at Canton, 9-1. Senior Tom Englehardt (Bradford, MA) knocked in two runs and junior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ) went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Senior Jarlin Gomez (Lawrence, MA) pitched 8 innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits and striking out 13 batters. Game two for the Falcons was the Winners bracket final against #2 seed UMPI. Fisher won 17-6 behind a strong start from Sammy Luciano (Union City, NJ). Luciano gave up 2 runs (both unearned) in the 5 innings he pitched. Freshman Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) was 3 for 4 at the plate with 3 RBIs. Also chipping in with 3 RBIs was Engelhardt, who was 2 for 3, and sophomore Kevin Ryan (Cheshire, CT) who was 1 for 3. Junior Juan Eusebio (Union City, NJ) recorded a multi-hit game by going 2 for 2. In the championship game, junior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, MA) dazzled the UMPI hitters in his 6 innings of work. Shanahan struckout 10 batters and allowed only 5 hits. Junior Eddie Guerrero (Boston, MA), freshman Austin Brodie (Haverhill, MA) and Ryan kept the UMPI Owls off the board in their inning on the mound. Ryan contributed on the offensive side as well as he was 3 for 6 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Englehardt went 3 for 5 with a RBI, Pena was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and junior Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) went 3 for 4 and 2 doubles in the blow out win. Fisher will now finish out their regular season schedule before they travel to the campus of Seton Hill University where they will take on the winner of the KIAC tournament in a best of three series to advance to the regionals.


Fisher Baseball Athletes earn top honors

Lynn, MA – Several Fisher College Baseball athletes have been named to the Sunrise Conference All Conference team. The awards were presented before the second game of the Sunrise Conference Baseball Championship Tournament, which was held at Frasier Field in Lynn, Massachusetts. Senior Tom Englehardt won his third straight Sunrise Conference Player of the Year Award and Head Coach Scott Dulin won his fifth straight Sunrise Conference Coach of the Year Award. There were also a couple of Fisher Baseball athletes that earned a Sunrise Conference Gold Glove for their outstanding defense. Tom Englehardt earned his second gold glove at third base, Edwin Pena earned his second gold glove at cathcer and sophomore Mike Oliveira earned his first gold glove at second base.


Fisher Softball Athletes earn top honors

Presque Isle, ME – Before the start of the Sunrise Conference Softball Championship Tournament, the Sunrise Conference All Conference team was announced. There were four Fisher Softball athletes who received the honor. They are:

Junior Jackie Streeter won her second consecutive Sunrise Conference Player of the Year award. She finishes the season hitting .575 with 10 Home Runs and 46 RBIs.

This weekend, both the Fisher Baseball and Softball teams will be competing in the Sunrise Conference Championship Tournament. The Baseball team enters the four team tourny as the overall number 1 seed and the Lady Falcons are the #2 seed. Here is a break down of the weekend.

Player to Watch: Tom Englehardt (Sr.)

Senior Tom Englehardt (Bradford, MA) has won two straight Sunrise Conference Player of the Year awards. He is on track to earn his third as he has continued to hit. His .462 batting average is the best in the conference and 15th in the country. Englehardt was also named to the NAIA Pre Season All American team. With scouts already paying attention to him, look for him to have a good tournament and become the first Fisher College Athlete to be selected in the Amateur Draft coming up in June.


Softball

This will be a best of three series between #2 Fisher College and #1 University of Maine at Presque Isle. Games will be played in Presque Isle, ME on Saturday, April 25th.




Player to Watch: Jackie Streeter (Jr.)

Junior Jackie Streeter (Westminster, MA) is leading the country in batting average (.586) and slugging percentage (1.008). She has also belted 10 Home Runs on the season.

Pair of Fisher Baseball student-athletes recognized

It was announced that juniors Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) and Sammy Luciano (Union City, NJ) have earned Sunrise Conference honors for the week of April 13th - April 19th. Thompson earned the Player of the Week after he pounded out eight hits in five games. Thompson went 8-for-18 and drove in eight runs while scoring six more. He was also 3-for-5 with three doubles and four RBIs in an 18-2 win over the College of St. Joseph. Thompson is fourth in the conference in RBIs with 27, seventh in doubles (7) and is batting .328 with 17 runs.

Luciano has been named the Sunrise Conference Pitcher of the Week. He receives the nod after shutting down the University of Maine at Presque Isle 17-4. Luciano recorded nine strikeouts and scattered five hits with no earned runs and just two walks over six innings. He is currently tied for second in the conference in strikeouts with 32 and is second in earned-run average at 4.25 and opponents batting average holding teams to a .248 average.

Fisher Baseball takes two from Maine-Farmington

Farmington, ME – The Fisher College Baseball team was able to sweep the season series versus Head Coach Scott Dulin’s alma mata, the University of Maine at Farmington, with a pair of wins today. In game one, junior Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) threw a complete game shutout to lead the way as Fisher won 3-0. Thompson struck out six and scattered six hits through his seven innings of work. Offensively in game one, seniors Tom Englehardt (Bradford, MA) and Eddy Delcarmen (Boston, MA) were both 2 for 4 and a stolen base with Delcarmen recording 2 RBI’s while Englehardt only recorded 1 RBI. The story of the game was Thompson. The left hander was reunited with his high school catcher JJ Navas (Beverly, MA) and that battery turned out into Fisher’s first complete game shutout of the season. With the win, Thompson improves his record to 3-1.

In game two, Fisher scored a pair of runs in the 4th and 5th innings while adding an insurance run in the 7th as they took the game by a final score of 5-3. Sophomore Kevin Ryan (Cheshire, CT) earned the victory on the mound as he pitched 5 innings allowing 1 run and 5 hits. This marks the sixth straight quality start by Fisher College pitchers in the past three days. Ryan improved his record to 3-2 while sophomore flame thrower Mark Dorso (Waterbury, CT) earned his second save. Dorso entered the game after Eddie Guerrero (Boston, MA) pitched himself into trouble in his second inning of work. Dorso just needed one batter as he retired the UMF batter on strikes. Sophomore Reynaldo Nunez (Santo Domingo, DR) hit his first home run of the season on his way to a 3 for 4 day at the plate. Navas also had recorded a three hit game as he was 3 for 4 with a triple. Also for Fisher College, Bobby Sorenson (Meridain, CT) made his first appearance in pinstripes as he started in right field and was 1 for 1 at the plate.

Fisher now looks forward to the Sunrise Conference Tournament which will be held at Fraiser Field in Lynn, MA on Friday, April 24. The championship game will be held on Saturday, April 25. The Sunrise Conference schools competing in this event will be the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Vermont Technical College and the State University of New York at Canton. Fisher College will look to take their 5th straight conference title. Fisher Baseball splits weekend set

Haverhill, MA – In what has become a heated rivalry, this weekend’s games between the Fisher Baseball team and Briarcliffe College was intense. On the first day of action, Briarcliffe took two games as they sneaked out a 5-3 win versus junior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, MA) and beat sophomore Kevin Michael (Ipswich, MA) in game two by a final of 3-1. Offensively, senior Tom Engelhardt (Bradford, MA) was 4 for 7 with 3 RBI’s. Sophomore Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA) recorded a multi-hit game in game two by going 2 for 4. Pitching wise, Shanahan threw 7 innings allowing 5 runs on 9 hits while striking out 5. In game two, Micheal went the distance (7 innings) allowing just 3 runs on 7 hits and retiring 3 Briarcliffe batters by way of the K.

Day Two was a different story for Fisher College. Fueled by Briarcliffe’s unsportsman like anticts after day one, Fisher roared back. In the first game, junior Sammy Luciano (Union City, NJ) threw a gem. He scattered 5 hits over 7 innings and fanned 5. Freshman Austin Brodie (Haverhill, MA) came on in relief during the extra frames and earned the win. He pitched 2 innings and struck out one. In the bottom of the 9th inning, junior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ) led off with a hit, senior Jesse Avalos (Haverhill, MA) came off the bench and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Pena to second. Head Coach Scott Dulin used his bench one more time as sophomore Matthew McDougal-Shaver (Minneapolis, MN) hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop, Pena advanced to third on that play. The heroics were left up to junior Zach Thompson (Salem, MA). He promptly hit an 0-2 pitch up the middle to center which scored Pena for the game winner. Final score was 3-2 Fisher College. Game two, Fisher College didn’t let Briarcliffe have a chance as they scored 10 runs in a 10-1 rout. Englehardt went 4 for 4 with 4 doubles, 2 RBI’s and 4 runs scored. Freshman Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) went 2 for 4 with a double and senior Eddy Delcarmen (Boston, MA) walked 3 times.

Fisher travels to Farmington, Maine where they will take on the Beavers of the University of Maine at Farmington in a double header. Game time is slated for 12pm.

Fisher Baseball continues its winning ways

Haverhill, MA – The Fisher Baseballl team team continued its offensive trend as they routed fellow Sunrise Conference member, College of Saint Joseph’s, in two straight games. In game one, freshman Richie Welch (Everett, MA) and sophomore Reynaldo Nunez (Santo Domingo, DR) paced the Fisher attack with three hits. Also recording a muti-hit game were senior Jesse Avalos (Haverhill, MA), who was 2-3, sophomore Matthew McDougal-Shaver (Minneapolis, MN), 2-4, and sophomore Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA), 2-3. Freshman Joe Aniki (Thomaston, CT) joined in on the 19 hit attack as he recorded a hit in his first college at bat. Sophomore Kevin Ryan (Cheshire, CT) dealt 5 innings of 2 hit ball, allowing 3 runs (a two run HR and a RBI double) to earn his second win of the season. Fisher won the game by a final score of 18-3.

In the second game, four different Fisher players recorded a three hit game. Juniors Zack Thompson (Salem, MA), who was 3-5 with 4 RBI’s, and Jon Olivo (Boston, MA), who went 3-4 with 3 RBI’s. Both Nunez and freshman Matthew Hendy (Rockport, MA) were a perfect 3-3. On the mound sophomore Kevin Michael (Ipswich, MA) pitched 5 innings, scattering 3 this while allowing two CSJ runners to cross the plate. With the win, Micheal improves to 3-3 on the season and Fisher improved to 19-15. Final score in game two was Fisher 19, College of Saint Joseph’s 2.

Walk Offs Continued!

Haverhill, MA – Both the Fisher College Baseball and Softball teams continue their winning ways as they took another two games from Sunrise Conference Rival Vermont Technical College. The Baseball team used late inning heroics to win game one and had an offensive explosion in game two. The softball team, behind the bat of junior Jackie Streeter (Westminster, MA), scored 19 runs in their two victories.

In game one, freshman Brittany Calderon (Rockport, MA) dazzeled the Vermont Tech hitters. She threw 5 scorless inning, giving up only one hit and striking out 6 en route to earning her win. Fisher scored 9 runs during the game as sophomore Michelle Oliverio (Everett, MA) collected three hits and knocked in two runs. Freshmen Deb Fuller (Hampton, NH) and Michelle Williams (Northwood, NH)also recorded two hits and stole a base.

Game two, is known as the Jackie Streeter game. The junior from Westminster, MA belted three home runs, all over 250+ feet, and collected 6 RBI’s. She hit a solo shot in the first inning, a three run Home Run in the third inning and a two run shot in the fifth inning. In her last at bat of the game, she was walked. Streeter also did well on the mound as she gave up 4 runs over 7 innings pitched, striking out 5 and walking 3. Besides Streeter, both sophomore Libby Whitcomb (Wilmington, VT) and freshman Courtney Golloto (Johnston, RI) went 2-4 in the game. Fisher went on to win by a final score of 10-4.

In game one, Fisher staged an extra inning come back to beat Vermont Technical College, 2-1 in 8 innings. In the 8th, sophomore Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA) doubled to begin the frame. Fellow classmate and double play partner, Kevin Ryan (Cheshire, CT), laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Oliveira to third. Senior Eddy Delcarmen (Boston, MA) ended the game with a base hit to left that scored Oliveira. Junior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, MA) dominated the Green Knights in his 8 innings of work. He struck out a game high 14 batters and surrendered 1 unearned run while allowing 3 hits and walking just one batter. The offensive star of the game was Oliveira, who was 2-4 with a stolen base.

Game two, the Fisher bats finally awoke as the team exploded to score 15 runs in a 15-5 win over VTC. Fisher was led offensively behind the bats of Senior Tom Englehardt (Haverhill, MA), junior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ), sophomore Reynaldo Nunez (Santo Domingo, DR) and freshman Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA). Englehardt, who came off the bench and replaced Nunez, went 2-3 with 2 runs scored and a double. Pena was 2-4 with an RBI. Nunez, who recently broke out of his slump, was a perfect 2-2. Lunetta continued to stay hot as he was 2-2 with a 3 runs scored, a RBI and a stolen base. Oliveira continues to earn the nickname Scrappy Doo as being a table setter. He reached base twice, stole two bases, scored a run and excecuted a perfect sacrifice bunt. The game was ended with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning due to a 10 run mercy rule. That’s when senior Jesse Avalos (Haverhill, MA) grounded out to third, which allowed freshman JJ Navas (Beverly, MA) to score the 15th run. Junior Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) collected 6 RBI’s in the game as well. Also, senior Jarlin Gomez (Lawrence, MA) celebrated his birthday in style as he pitched 5 innings and earning the win.

Fisher looks to continue their winnnig trend as they host UMPI on Friday in a makeup game. Game time is set for 1pm at Haverhill Stadium.

Wild Walk-Off Tuesday

Haverhill, MA – In what was a wild day at the ballpark, both the Fisher College Baseball and Softball teams used a couple of walk-off hits to defeat Sunrise Conference opponent Vermont Technical College.

Baseball

Junior Zack Thompson

In the first game, starting pitcher Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) earned his first win of the season as he scattered 5 hits, striking out 8 while surrendering only 1 run in the 5 innings he pitched. Senior Eddy Delcarmen (Boston, MA) came on in relief of Thompson and pitched 2 scoreless frames, facing only 6 batters and striking out 3. Offensively, Fisher was led by sophomore shortstop Kevin Ryan (Chesire, CT). Ryan went 3-4 with a double and a RBI while playing errorlessly at short. Fellow classmate, Matthew McDougal-Shaver (Minneapolis, MN) knocked in 2 runs to help Fisher beat the visiting Vermont Technical College Green Knights, 5-1.

Senior Eddy Delcarmen

Game two started out just like the first one. Fisher scored 4 times in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Vermont Tech could not solve starting pitcher Kevin Ryan. Ryan allowed only 1 (unearned) run over 7 innings while striking out 12 batters. However, Vermont Tech got to the Fisher bullpen. Freshman Austin Brodie (Haverhill, MA) allowed 1 run in the 8th inning, which made the score 5-2. In the top of the 9th inning, junior Eddie Guerrero (Boston, MA) came on for the save. He allowed 3 runs to cross the plate (and tie the game) while only recording two outs. Sophomore Mark Dorso (Waterbury, CT) came one to stop the bleeding and retire the only batter he faced. Here is where the dramatics start. Freshman Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) singled to begin the bottom of the 9th. Junior Juan Eusebio (Union City, NJ) came off the bench and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Lunetta into scoring position. Head Coach Scott Dulin then relied on senior Eddy Delcarmen to win the game. Delcarmen did just that as he lined a 1-1 offering into left field for a game winning walk off hit. Fisher swept the day from Vermont Tech as they beat VTC in game two 6-5. Fisher had three players recording 2 or more hits. Sophomore Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA) was 2-4, sophomore Reynaldo Nunez (Santo Domingo, DR) finally broke out of his slump by going 2-3 with 2 RBI’s and Lunetta was 2-5 in game two.




Softball

Down 4-3 going into the bottom of the 7th and final inning, Fisher mounted a come back versus Sunrise Conference opponent Vermont Technical College. With one out, sophomore Michelle Oliverio (Everett, MA) singled to center. The next batter, freshman Deb Fuller (Hampton, NH) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Oliverio into scoring position. Junior Jackie Streeter (Westminster, MA)was the next batter. The reigning Sunrise Conference Softball Player of the Week deposited a 1-2 offering over the left-center field fence for a two-run walk off Home Run. Fisher won 5-4. That home run highlighted Streeter’s day as she finished a perfect 4-4 with 4 RBI’s, 2 doubles and a Home Run. Freshman Brittany Calderon (Rockport, MA) earned her 4th win of the season as she allowed 4 runs, 5 hits and striking out 8 over her 7 innings of work.

In game two, Streeter’s hot bat continued to sizzle as Fisher beat Vermont Tech 8-5. Streeter was 2-4 with another RBI, but she was not the only Fisher player to record 2 hits. Sophomore Jessica Augusta (Methuen, MA) went 2-3 with a RBI and a stolen base. Streeter pitched a complete game, allowing just 5 runs on 5 hits and striking out 5. She earned her 4th win of the season with the victory.

Both the Baseball and Softball teams continue their Sunrise Conference play, as they take on Vermont Technical College tomorrow (April 1, 2009) at Haverhill Stadium. Both double headers start at 3pm.
