Fisher Baseball opens up Conference Play with two wins

Haverhill, MA – Fisher College Baseball continued its winning ways this past weekend as they beat Sunrise Conference opponent University of Maine at Presque Isle twice on Saturday, March 28. Fisher used a 5 run fifth, to take the first game 6-1 and belted two home runs in game two to win easily 12-0.

In game one, starting pither Sammy Luciano held UMPI to 1 run, 4 hits and striking out 5 over 7 innings in a complete game effort. Sophomores Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA) and Kevin Ryan (Chesire, CT) help paced the Fisher offense (both were 2-3 at the plate) as they set the table for both junior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ), who was also 2-3 with an RBI, and senior Eddy Delcarmen (Boston, MA) who had a clutch triple in the fifth inning.

Game two, however, was a different story. Fisher jumped all over UMPI pitching right away as they scored 8 runs in the first inning. Pena continued his season long trend of mashing the ball as he hit a 3 run Home Run and fellow classmate Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) finally broke out of his slump as he hit his first career home run, a 2 run shot over the brick wall in right. Sophomore Kevin Michael (Ipswich, MA)pitched 5 strong shutout innings, as sophomore Mark Dorso (Waterbury, CT) and junior Eddie Guererro (Boston, MA) combined to shutout UMPI, Fisher’s second shutout in as many days.

Texas Trip - Day Five Recap

Post Game Recap:

Mondello's gem helps Fisher go 1-1 on the Day

Junior Rob Mondello pitches 8 strong innings to earn his first win

With two 9 inning games being played, Fisher need a strong pitching performance in atleast one game. That performance came in game two, as junior Rob Mondello (Haverhill, MA) threw 8 innings giving up 1 run, allowing 8 hits and striking out 4 for his first victory of the season. Fisher beat the University of Texas at Brownsville 7-1. Fisher's offense also continued to stay hot as junior catcher Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ) belted two home runs, his first multi-homer game of his career, and finished the day 5-6 with 5 RBIs.

Junior Catcher Edwin Pena

However, Fisher dropped the first 9 inning game of the day to Valley City State University 15-8. The score makes it sound more lopsided than it was. Fisher had a one run deficit going into the bottom of the seventh, as Tom Englehardt (Bradford, MA) hit a three run home run to make it 6-5 VCSU. In the bottom of the 7th, Fisher's bullpen gave up 7 runs and Valley City would add 2 more in the 8th. Fisher tried to come back by scoring 3 in the top of the 8th, but the rally fell short.

Fisher looks to continue this impressive road trip to Texas today, March 19th, when they take on the University of Houston-Victoria in a 7pm est contest. You can follow all the action right here starting at 6:45 pm est.

Texas Trip - Day Three Recap

Post Game Recap:

Fisher splits double header with Valley City

Senior Tom Englehardt hit a 2 run HR to help Fisher earn a spilt with VCSU

Tom Englehardt (Bradford, MA) had an outstanding day as Fisher College split a double header against Valley City State University. Fisher dropped the first game of the day 12-0 in a shortened 5 inning game due to the mercy rule. Valley City beat up on starter Zack Thompson (Salem, MA), who was making his first start of the year. The Vikings touched him up for 8 runs in 3.1 innings. On the other side, Fisher could not solve the Vikings starting pitcher Shane Schoeneburg.

In game two, Fisher flipped the switch and came out swinging. Englehardt led the charge by going 4 for 4 with a 2 run HR to right, which landed in Mexico. Also doing well for the Falcons was starting pitcher Kevin Ryan (Cheshire, CT). Ryan threw a complete game gem, allowing 4 runs, striking out 6 and surrendering 5 hits over the course of 7 innings. Freshman JJ Navas (Beverly, MA) recorded a double in his first college at bat. Fisher won game two by a score of 9-4.

With a rare off day tomorrow, the Falcons will be back in action Wednesday when they take on Valley City one more time with a 9 inning game. Game time is 3pm est. Immediately following that game, Fisher will take on Texas-Brownsville in a 9 inning contest.
