Fisher beats Hesser College but not the Rain

Bedford, NH - The Fisher College baseball team scored two runs in the top of the first as they beat Hesser College by a final of 4-0. The game was played inside of Merchantsauto.com Stadium, the home of the New Hampshire FisherCats (Double A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays). The game was called in the top half of the sixth inning with Fisher ahead 8-0. Since it was called due to weather, the score is reverted back to the end of the fifth.

Junior Reynaldo Nunez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) knocked in the eventual game winning run as he singled down the right field line that plated sophomore Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) and senior Zack Thompson (Salem, MA). The Falcons (22-19/11-1) would also score a single in the second and fourth innings. In the second, Lunetta singled to right which allowed freshman Jose Paulino (Lawrence, MA) to score the third Fisher run. Paulino would cross the plate again in the fourth when junior Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA) hit a single to right-center field.

That would all the scoring Fisher needed as five pitchers combined for a shutout. Junior Mark Dorso (Waterbury, CT) started on the mound and pitched 2.0 hitless innings while striking out two. Sophomore Austin Brodie (Haverhill, MA) also struck out two batters in his inning of work. Senior Zack Timmermeyer (Lewiston, ME) was awarded the victory, his first of the season, as he recorded the last out in the fifth.

Fisher will travel across the Charles River as they will play at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Game time is set for 4 pm with junior Kevin Michael (Ipswich, MA) on the mound.

Baseball remians unbeaten in Conference Play

Game One: Fisher College 5, Vermont Technical 0

Randolph Center, VT - Senior Sammy Luciano (Union City, NJ) tossed 4.0 shut out innings as the Fisher Falcons took game one by a final of 5-0.

Senior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ) knocked in a run on his 1-for-4 day while also scoring a run to lead the Falcons (19-18/9-0) to victory. Also collecting hits for Fisher was sophomore Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) and freshman Dave Ferreira (Saugus, MA).

Sophomore Austin Brodie (Haverhill, MA) threw two innings of relief. Both senior Zack Timmermeyer (Lewiston, ME) and freshman Matt Foster (Peterborough, NH) combined to pitch a scoreless seventh to preserve the shut out.

Game Two: Fisher College 11, Vermont Technical College 0

Oakes (above) led the offensive attack for Fisher

Randolph Center, VT - A whole new line-up produced better results as Fisher beat Vermont Technical College in game two easily, 11-0.

Senior Rob Mondello (Haverhill, MA) earned his first victory of the season as he tossed a complete game shut out. He allowed the Green Knights just one hit, a Jeff Savage single in the first inning. Mondello also got four VTC hitters to go down by way of the K in his 66 pitch effort.

The story of the day belongs to freshman Jesse Oakes (Piermont, NH). Playing in front of family and friends, Oakes knocked in three runs and scored three runs in his first collegiate start. He finished the game 2-for-3 and is now hitting an impressive .800 on the season (4-for-5).

However Oakes was not the only freshman to do damage in game two. Sammy Aljeandro (East Hartford, CT) had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate. He was out done by Sebastiano Petruzzelli (Saugus, MA). "Yano" had a solid three hit game as he was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Other freshman collecting hits in the game were Dave Ferreira (Saugus, MA), Bobby Ellard (Medfield, MA) and Steven Clark (Haverhill, MA).

The Falcons will finish this seven game road trip tomorrow (Sunday 4/25) afternoon when the take on Vermont Tech in a Sunrise Conference double-header. Game one starts at 12 pm with Senior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, MA) on the mound for Fisher. He will be opposed by VTC senior Jeff Savage.

FIsher earns a split at Maine-Farmington

Game One: Fisher College 10, Maine-Farmington 7

Farmington, ME – Freshman Steven Clark’s (Haverhill, MA) RBI single lifted Fisher past Maine-Farmington in game one, 10-7 in extra innings.

Trailing 7-4 in the top the seventh, Maine-Farmington (4-20) got two quick outs and was in position to win. Sophomore Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) got the rally started as he reached base on a walk. Junior Jose Rodriguez (Clermont, FL) laced a single to right to bring the tying run to the plate in senior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ). Pena hit a ground ball towards third. It took a Fisher bounce and went off the third basemen’s chest. With the bases loaded, a pass ball allowed Rodriguez to cross the plate. Up stepped junior Reynaldo Nunez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) with two runners in scoring position. He promptly laced a 1-1 offering into the right center gap for the game-tying 2 RBI double.

Seniors Sammy Luciano (Union City, NJ) and Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) came on in relief and held the Beaver offense scoreless the rest of the game.

In the top half of the ninth, Rodriguez placed a bunt perfectly down the third base line for a base hit. He then proceed to steal second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk was issued to Pena, Clark delivered with a base hit past the diving third baseman to bring home Rodriguez. Fisher (18-17/8-0) would score two more runs in the inning to secure the victory.

Thompson, who pitched 2.0 innings of relief and struck out three, got credit for the win. He now has 16 career victories which places him tied for second on the all time list with Jarlin Gomez '09. The career leader is Kyle VanOfferan '07 who has 17 wins.

Game Two: Maine-Farmington 5, Fisher College 2

Farmington, ME - A two-run home run by junior Reynaldo Nunez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) was all that Fisher could manage as Maine-Farmington took game two, 5-2.

Senior Zack Thomspon (Salem, MA) was the starting pitcher for the Falcons (18-18/8-0). He pitched 4.0 innings while allowing Maine-Farmington (5-20) to score five runs on six hits. Thompson did strike out five in game two, giving him a total of eight strikeouts on the day. Junior Patrick Talbot (Madison, CT) tossed the final two innings. He did not allow a hit or a run and struck out two.

Nunez finished the day 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Both sophomore Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) and freshman Sebastiano Petruzzelli (Saugus, MA) recorded a hit each to account for all of the Fisher offense.

A Look Ahead!

The road trip continues as the Falcons head to Randolph Center, Vermont where they will take on Sunrise Conference rival Vermont Technical College in a four game set. Saturday's double-header is scheduled to start at 12 pm on the campus of VTC.

Fisher is currently 8-0 in Sunrise Conference play while Vermont Technical College checks in with a 1-3 record. Fisher has won 18 of 19 against the Green Knights. The only loss came back on April 19, 2008. The Falcons dropped game one of the double-header, 8-2 in their initial visit to the VTC campus.
