Baseball takes two from Siena, while Softball drops both at Spring Arbor

Baseball

Game One: Fisher 17, Siena Heights University 1

Reynaldo Nunez had 5 RBI's in the first inning, including a Grand Slam

Adrian, MI - After being mercy ruled yesterday by Siena Heights, the Fisher Baseball team decided to return the favor as they scored 12 runs in the first inning en route to a 17-1 victory in five innings.

The first innings was highlighted by a pair of home runs. Junior Jose Rodriguez (Clermont, FL) hit a moon shot over the batter's eye in dead center field. The estimated distance is believed to be over 450 feet. Fisher would score seven more times before junior Reynaldo Nunez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) approached the plate for the second time in the inning with the bases loaded. Nunez then deposited a hanging curve ball well over the left-field fence for a grand slam. This was the second grand slam hit this season by the Falcons as freshman Dave Ferreira (Saugus, MA) hit one against the University of Houston at Victoria on March 19th. In the inning, Nunez accumulated 5 RBI's and he also extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

The Fisher offensive attack was not done as they continued to add a run in the third and two runs in the fourth and fifth. Sophomore Richie Welch (Everett, MA) collected an RBI hit in the third while freshman Sebastiano Petruzzelli (Saugus, MA) and freshman Sammy Alejandro (East Hartford, CT) had the RBI hits in the fourth. In the fifth inning, freshman Jesse Oakes (Piermont, NH) knocked in Welch for his first collegiate RBI and Alejandro hit a sacrifice fly to account for the second run of the inning.

Senior Sammy Luciano (Union City, NJ) pitched all five innings for the Falcons. He allowed the SHU Saints to just one run on four hits while striking out one and walking one. Luciano improves his record to 3-1 on the season.

Game Notes: Of the fourteen hits that the Falcons had in game one, only Rodriguez had a multi-hit game. He went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a Home Run. The twelve runs in the first inning matches the game high for runs scored during the 2010 season.

Game Two: Fisher 10, Siena Heights University 2

Dave Ferreira went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's in the victory

Adrian, MI - The Fisher offense continued to stay hot with the bats as they scored 10 runs on 11 hits to complete the double header sweep over Siena Heights University.

As in game one, Fisher scored early and often. The offense gave game two's starting pitcher senior Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) a 4-0 lead before he even stepped on the mound. Sophomore Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) led the game off with a base hit and was sacrificed over to second by junior Jose Rodriguez (Clermont, FL). With two away and runners on first and second, junior Reynaldo Nunez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) extended his hitting streak to 13 games as he singled home Lunetta. Freshman Dave Ferreira (Saugus, MA) then singled through the left side of the infield to plate courtesy runner, sophomore Richie Welch (Everett, MA), for a 2-0 lead. Ferreira's classmate Denon Rushing (Palmdale, CA) then duplicated what Ferreira did as he singled through the infield to score both Nunez and Ferreira.

That's all the offense that Thompson would need as he pitched brilliantly over his five innings of work. He gave up two runs (both earned) on four hits while sending three SHU Saints down by way of the K. Senior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, MA) came on and pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three of the nine batters he faced.

The Fisher offense added single runs in the third and fourth before putting up another four spot in the sixth. Ferreira singled home Welch in the third while junior Mike Oliveira (Tewksbury, MA) crossed the plate in the fourth when Lunetta was caught stealing.

Three of the four runs in the sixth came courtesy of Rodriguez. His ground ball to the right side, where the SHU first baseman booted, allowed Oliveira and Welch to score. With one out and runners at second and third, Rodriguez showcased his speed as he stole home! Senior Alfredo Torres (Lawrence, MA), who reached base after being hit by the pitch, scampered over to third on the steal of home. He would then advance 90 feet and score the fourth run of the inning on Nunez grounder to third.

With the two victories, Fisher College improves its 2010 record to 8-11. They will look to take two more tomorrow and make it four of five from Siena Heights. The double header is scheduled to start at 10 am (cst).

Game Notes: Torres and Ferreira recorded two hits apiece as they were the only Falcons to have a multi-game. Welch scored three runs in game two, that's tied for the most runs scored in one game by a Falcon this season (Lunetta scored three runs against Houston-Victoria on March 19th).

A Texas sized heartbreaker for Fisher Baseball

Zack Thompson struck out 9 Jaguars in 6.0 innings

Victoria, TX - In what was one of the best baseball games of the 2010 season, the Fisher College Baseball dropped the final game of the week long Texas Trip to the University of Houston-Victoria tonight by a score of 7-6.

Senior Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) pitched effectively as he allowed the Jaguars to just three runs over his six innings of work while striking out nine.

Houston-Victoria would strike first in the bottom half of the second inning. After the first two batters were retired, UHV got back to back hits to put runners at first and second. The next batter then laced a double down the left field line that plated both runners and give UHV the early 2-0 lead. Fisher would battle back in the top of the third. They got a RBI single from junior Reynaldo Nunez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) that scored senior Alfredo Torres (Lawrence, MA) to cut the lead in half. UHV then added a run in bottom half of the third and the scored would remain 3-1 until the sixth.

Nunez and freshman Denon Rushing (Palmdale, CA) would begin the frame with a pair of walks. Freshman Dave Ferreira (Saugus, MA) then placed a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher and reached when the throw to third was not in time. With the bases loaded and one out, Fisher College Head Coach Scott Dulin called upon freshman Sebastiano Petruzzelli (Saugus, MA) to pinch hit. Petruzzelli got credit for a RBI as we walked on a full count. With the score now 3-2, sophomore Gary Lunetta (North Andover, MA) stepped up to the plate. He reached first on yet another walk, that plated Rushing to tie the game at three. Up stepped junior Jose Rodriguez (Clermont, FL). Rodriguez singled through the left side of the infield and two more Falcons crossed the plate to make it a 5-3 game.

Senior Rob Mondello (Haverhill, MA) was summonded from the bullpen to begin the seventh. He gave up back to back hits and then a sacrifice fly. Just like that UHV was one run away from tying the game and had a runner on base. Coach Dulin came out and made a call to the bullpen. Senior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, MA) came on and closed the door in the seventh. He promptly struck out the first batter he faced then issued a walk to the next. With the tying just 180 feet away at second base, Shanahan fired three blazing fastballs by the next hitter to end the threat.

UHV would tie the game in the eighth when the leadoff hitter lifted the first pitch he saw from Shanahan up into the wind. The ball landed on the other side of the fence for a solo home run and the scored was once again tied, this time at five.

Now it is time for the craziest inning of the game, the ninth. With one out, Torres singled up the middle. Senior Juan Eusebio (Union City, NJ) was then inserted as a pinch runner. Senior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ) lifted a fall ball down the right field line. The wind got a hold of it and it appeared to hit the foul pole and give the Falcons a 7-5 lead. After a discussion between the umpires, they deemed it a foul ball. Pena would then reach base due to a fielding error by the UHV third basemen. After a fly ball to deep right field from Nunez, Eusebio tagged and advanced to third. With runners on the corners and two away, sophomore Richie Welch (Everett, MA) broke for second base early, a designed first-and-third play. The Jaguar pitcher then threw the ball over the second basemen's head into right field. Eusebio would score and give the Falcons a 6-5 lead.

In the home half of the ninth, Shanahan walked the lead off batter. He then proceed to strikeout the next hitter for the first out. The third batter of the inning then hit a ground ball to freshman shortstop Jose Paulino (Lawrence, MA) would couldn't handle the tough hop and UHV had first and third with one out. Shanahan got into a grove and overpowered the following hitter, striking him out on just three pitches. With two outs and two stikes, the UHV hitter hit a 1-2 slider into shallow right-center field. The centerfielder Rodriguez dove but it was just out of his reach and the tying run scored. Defensive replacement freshman Bobby Ellard (Medfield, MA) picked the ball up and threw it home to try and keep the game tied. However, the UHV runner was a step to quick as he slid in just before Pena could apply the tag and Houston-Victoria went on to win in a thriller by a final score of 7-6.

Fisher College concludes the Texas Spring Break trip with a 6-6 record and now have an overall record of 6-10 on the 2010 season. Fisher will return to Boston on Sunday afternoon and prepare for next weekend's trip to Adrian, Michigan where they will take on Sienna Heights University in a five game set. Game one is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 3pm.

Game Notes: Torres was 3-for-5 on the night with a run scored and Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in. Also Thompson and Shanahan combined to strike out 15 Jaguars in their 8.1 innings of work (Shanahan struck out six in his 2.1 innings).

With the bas.es loaded, Ferreira lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored sophomore Richie Welch (Everett, MA). Petruzzelli delivered as he laced a bases clearing double down the left field line.

Baseball beats Houston-Victoria, 3-1

Freshman Reed pitches the Falcons past the Jaguars

Casey Reed earned his first collegiate win tonight at Houston-Victoria

Victoria, TX - Behind a dazzling pitching performance from freshman Casey Reed (Ossipee, NH), the Fisher College Baseball team beat the University of Houston at Victoria tonight by a final score of 3-1.

Making his first collegiate start, the Kingswood Regional High graduate kept the Jaguar hitters off balance all night. He threw 8.0 innings allowing UHV to just four hits and one run while striking out eight. Reed also did not allow a walk but he did hit a batter.

"Tremendous." said Fisher College Head Coach Scott Dulin of Reed's performance. "Casey did more than we asked him to. This was the best win that we have had as a team that I can remember."

The Fisher bats came alive. After Reed allowed UHV to take the 1-0 lead in the third, the Fisher offense scored twice to take the lead that they never relinquished. Senior Alfredo Torres (Lawrence, MA) reached second to begin the inning after the UHV second baseman's error. He would come around to score when junior Reynaldo Nunez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) laced a line drive over the third basemen's outstretched glove. Fisher would score the second run via another UHV error. Courtesy runner, sophomore Richie Welch (Everett, MA) came around and scored when the shortstop booted a ground ball hit by senior Juan Eusebio (Union City, NJ).

In the fifth, senior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ) who reach on an error to begin the frame. Welch was inserted as the courtesy runner and scored on Nunez's RBI double of the center field wall.

That was all that Reed would need to earn his first victory of the season despite the scare in the ninth. Reed, still on the mound, hit the first batter of the inning and then allowed a base hit. Coach Dulin then would come out and make the call to the bullpen. He summoned senior Patrick Shanahan (Haverhill, MA) to close it out. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Shanahan induced the first batter he faced to pop up in foul territory to the first basemen Torres. The UHV runner, that was on first base, was off with the pitch and Torres was able to make the catch and flip it to Shanahan who stepped on first and doubled off the runner. Now with two away, Shanahan struck out the next batter to end the game and preserve the win for the Falcons.

"I'm speechless. I mixed my pitches effectively and took advantage of their aggressiveness at the plate." said Reed after the win. "To be able to start such an important game is an honor. I'm glad that Coach Dulin gave me this opportunity tonight."

With the win, Fisher improves its record to 5-8 on the season and more importantly to 5-4 on their annual spring break trip. This is the first time in the short nine year history of the program that the Falcons have a winning record during the week long spring break trip.

Fisher College will resume the four game series with Houston-Victoria tomorrow afternoon. The double header will begin at 4 pm (cst).

Baseball splits the last two in Brownsville, TX

Game One: Texas-Brownsville 3, Fisher College 1

Rob Mondello took the tough luck loss in Game One

Brownsville, TX - Senior Rob Mondello (Haverhill, MA) used just 66 pitches through his six innings of work but Texas-Brownsville was able to scratch out three runs to defeat the Falcons in game one by a final of 3-1.

Texas-Brownsville got on the board quick as they scored twice in the opening frame and then added another run in the bottom of the fifth. Fisher would score their only run of the game in the top half of the sixth inning. Senior Edwin Pena (Union City, NJ) extended his hitting streak to five games when he laced a ball through the left side of the infield and into left. Sophomore Richie Welch (Everett, MA) was inserted as the courtesy runner and scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Denon Rushing (Palmdale, CA).

"We had our opportunity to win the game," said Fisher College Head Coach Scott Dulin. "We had the runners on but we just couldn't get that one hit to break it open. Robbie (Mondello) threw a terrific ball game. It's unfortunate that we couldn't get him the win that he deserved."

Mondello pitched effectively in his start. He limited the potent Scorpion offense to just three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out three in the complete game loss.

Game Two: Fisher College 6, Valley City State 5

Mark Dorso picked up his first win of the season in relief

Brownsville, TX - In what was the most exciting game of the young 2010 season, Fisher College came from behind and scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to steal a win from Valley City and sweep the four game set.

Junior Kevin Michael (Ipswich, MA) gave the Fisher pitching a much needed quality start as he pitched five innings giving up eight hits while allowing five runs, in which only two were earned. Reliever Mark Dorso (Waterbury, CT) came in with a runner on in the sixth. He allowed that run, which was Micheal's fifth, to score on a bleeder that fell in shallow left field.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Rushing stepped up and drilled a 1-1 offering over the left field wall for his first collegiate home run and more importantly, a game tying home run. With two outs, Dulin sent a pinch hitter in freshman Sebastiano Petruzzelli (Saugus, MA) to the plate. He lifted a fly ball into shallow right field where the Viking second baseman dropped it and allowed the inning to continue. Welch then came on to run and scored on a bazaar play. Junior Jose Rodriguez (Clermont, FL) hit a pop up about 10 feet in front of home plate. After mass confusion between three VCSU players, the ball dropped and Welch scampered in for the go-ahead run.

Mondello then came on for the save and need just 12 pitches to dispose of the Vikings and earn his first save of the season.

Pena continued to stay red hot as he hit his first home run of the season, a game tying solo shot in the fifth, and extended his team leading hitting streak to six games.

Baseball

Zack Thompson hit the first Home Run of the 2010 season for the Falcons

Game One: Univ. of Texas @ Brownsville 8, Fisher 2

Fisher took the lead in the 2nd inning when senior Zack Thompson (Salem, MA) drilled a 1-2 pitch over the right field wall for a two out, two run home run which plated freshman David Ferreira (Saugus, MA), who reached on a single to center. That would be all that Fisher could manage off of UTB starter Dan Gidora. Gidora pitched a complete game (7 innings) allowing just the two runs and striking out five Falcons.

As for Mondello, he went 4.0 + innings and was charged with four runs (three earned) on four hits while recording five strikeouts. A trio of Falcon relievers came in to finish the game, including freshman Jose Paulino (Lawrence, MA), who made his first collegiate appearance.
